Tours/Events 2009
Our annual Cycle tour on the Somerset Levels with Glastonbury Tor in the background.

The years roll around and here we are at the start of another dancing season. Easter this year is in mid-April so theres a good chance we'll get a good dancing day. As usual we're starting at Vivary Park in Taunton and distributing Simnel Cake if you're lucky you might get a piece. It usually only lasts as far as Halse, although it has been seen at Hillfarrance.

The dances we are performing this year come from Brackley in Northamptonshire and Ilmington, in Warkwickshire

The earliest known date for Morris dancing in Brackley is in May 1725 when they received half a guinea for dancing at Aynho House. By the 1870s the side regularly carried out a week-long tour of the neighbourhood at Whitsun, but by the 1880s this had ended and they danced irregularly if at all. There was a brief revival for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887, with new ribbons being purchased for the dancers. The dances you see were taught to Cecil Sharp by Timothy Howard of Buckley, and John Stutsbury of Hinton-in-the-Hedges. The Ilmington dances were originally published in the the Morris Book Part 1 (1912-24) edited by Cecil Sharp and Herbert MacIlwaine. The Ilmington Morris is a living tradition (that is still danced in the village) and was revived in 1970s. For for information on both these traditions see below.
